BackCare is just back from attending the first Active Working Summit. Experts from around the globe flew in for the event in London, organised by Gavin Bradley of the Get Britain Standing campaign. The take home message? The average UK adult sits for 9 hours per day – more than double the recommend limit. The dangers of prolonged sitting – including increased risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes – cannot be reversed even by regular intense exercise. Lack of exercise and prolonged sitting are two separate risk factors. The recommendation? We need to find ways to build frequent movement variety into our normal daily life. The biggest culprit seems to be the sedentary work environment with workers spending prolonged hours at their desks. Solutions for the office worker include: sit-stand working, walking meetings and taking calls standing.
